A family affair
Run by the fourth generation of the Blome family in the town of Sundern in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, we carry the legacy of strong family allegiance and a talent for business, but blomus as a brand also tells the story of a geographical area that was once the home of a thriving steel and coal industry. The family business was established in 1921 as a manufacturer of bicycle parts, and in 1961 we branched out into gifts and design items, locally produced from copper, brass, pewter, and stainless steel. Year 2000 marked another shift in our history, when the name blomus was chosen, and the visionary design brand of today was born.
Times have changed, and the region of North Rhine-Westphalia is no longer the industrial hub for steel production; however, our historic roots still play a vital role, and we continue to be known for our devotion to exquisite quality, a highly innovative approach to product development, and a desire to look beyond the mere aesthetics of a product and view its practical properties as equally important. In combination with an overall design philosophy that expresses simplicity and an uncompromising approach to colour, shape, and choice of material, this has positioned us as a strong player on the international design scene.
In many aspects of life, magic occurs when opposites meet and bring out the best in each other. This also holds true for design, where the feminine qualities of grace, balance, and sophistication are only reinforced when accompanied by a masculine counterweight of stringency, restraint, and a focus on purpose.
The aesthetic values that define our brand are a result of the meeting of these conventionally masculine and feminine qualities of design. In our world, there can be no flawless beauty without practical perfection – and no function without the well-designed shape that will immediately attract attention and please the eye. Every design object by blomus is the perfect marriage between the visually appealing and the practical; between shape and function. One cannot exist without the other.
An international mindset
We know that nothing is static, and in order to constantly develop and grow as a business and as individuals, we cannot stand alone. Even though our roots are German, we are an international brand with an international mindset. We deal with people from all corners of the world, and we adapt to global trends and transnational modes of operating. By collaborating across borders in a world that is smaller than ever, we will continue to get better, wiser, and stronger.
We have recently set up a Copenhagen office in order to infuse our brand with the Scandinavian way of thinking, in terms of design, product innovation, and the unique Nordic notion of how design is ideally incorporated in every little mundane activity of everyday life. We feel that this goes perfectly hand in hand with our German heritage, and the match between the Nordic minimalism and the German sense of quality and craftmanship has resulted in a new series of blomus products – to be valued and enjoyed by people all over the globe.
